Objectives & Mission of the Department:

The objective and mission of the dapartment is to inculcate in the minds of the students a strong fascination for learning science, physics in particuar, and motivate them to take up a scientific career, either academic or Research and Development, and groom them worthy citizens of India. This has been realized over the years by excellent teaching and also by exposing the students to recent developments in science through periodic revision of the syllabi and frequent guest lectures by experts in different fields of physics.

Courses offered:

The department was offering physics education with a two year B.Sc Degree course 1956, which was converted to a three year B.Sc Degree course in 1957. It became a Post-Graduate department in 1958. It was the first to have the PG physics course in Madurai. Prof P.S. VBaradachari as the first Head of the Post-Graduate department, nourished the same to become a well recognized centre of physics educateion. Dr. K. Ramamoorthy, Prof S. Alwan, Dr.K.R. Balasubramanian, Prof Rangaragan, Prof N.Sankarasubramanian, Prof M.Krishnamoorthy, Prof N.Raman, Prof R. Sundarajan have subsequently contributed very much to the growth and development of Department. Presently Prof M.R.Ganapathy is serving as the Head of the Department. The department now also offers the B.Sc and M.Sc courses under the Self-finance scheme,

The Research activities include fields as Crystallography, Non-Conventional energy sources, Environmental studies and Thin films. Dr.R.Saravanan has published several papers in reputed foreigh journals and is engaged in carrying out two CSIR projects.

Department library:

The Department has an excellent library with over 6000 books, The collectin includes many classic works wirtted by famous scientists and Nobel laureates. These are sources of inspiration for both students and teachers, and motivate them a gain a scientific temper. Some of the books are now out of print but are frequently referred to by teachers and research scholars.

laboratory:

The Department has a well-equipped laboratory, perhaps the biggest in Tamilnadu. Besides the usual instruments and apparatus, it has a LAN with 10 nodes a Thin Film Setup. Students are regularly trained on C++ Programming and numerical methods.

The department has excellent tie-ups with some of the National Laboratories to facilitate the students to carry out their Project work. These include, the indian Institute of Astrophysics (Kodaikanal), Indian Institure of Geomagnetism (Tirunelveli), IGCAR (Kalpakkam), CECRI (Kariakudu), IUCAA (Pune) and Nuclear Science Center (New Delhi). The Madurai Kamarau University also helps the students in the exection of their projects.

No wonder many of our students are well settled all over the world, some of them occupying very high positions. This is perhaps the reason why the Madura College is the NUMBER ONE CHIOCE for physics education is Madurai.
