| Objectives &
Mission of the Department: |
|
The objective
and mission of the dapartment is to inculcate in the
minds of the students a strong fascination for learning
science, physics in particuar, and motivate them to
take up a scientific career, either academic or Research
and Development, and groom them worthy citizens of India.
This has been realized over the years by excellent teaching
and also by exposing the students to recent developments
in science through periodic revision of the syllabi
and frequent guest lectures by experts in different
fields of physics. |

Courses offered: |

The department was offering
physics education with a two year B.Sc Degree course
1956, which was converted to a three year B.Sc Degree
course in 1957. It became a Post-Graduate department
in 1958. It was the first to have the PG physics course
in Madurai. Prof P.S. VBaradachari as the first Head
of the Post-Graduate department, nourished the same
to become a well recognized centre of physics educateion.
Dr. K. Ramamoorthy, Prof S. Alwan, Dr.K.R. Balasubramanian,
Prof Rangaragan, Prof N.Sankarasubramanian, Prof M.Krishnamoorthy,
Prof N.Raman, Prof R. Sundarajan have subsequently contributed
very much to the growth and development of Department.
Presently Prof M.R.Ganapathy is serving as the Head
of the Department. The department now also offers the
B.Sc and M.Sc courses under the Self-finance scheme,

The Department became a recognized Research center in
2004 with Dr. V.Sivakumar, Dr.T.V.Krishnamoorthy, Dr.C.Gopinathan,
and Dr.R.Saravanan as research guides. The Research
activities include fields as Crystallography, Non-Conventional
energy sources, Environmental studies and Thin films.
Dr.R.Saravanan has published several papers in reputed
foreigh journals and is engaged in carrying out two
CSIR projects.

The Department has an
excellent library with over 6000 books, The collectin
includes many classic works wirtted by famous scientists
and Nobel laureates. These are sources of inspiration
for both students and teachers, and motivate them a
gain a scientific temper. Some of the books are now
out of print but are frequently referred to by teachers
and research scholars.

The Department has a
well-equipped laboratory, perhaps the biggest in Tamilnadu.
Besides the usual instruments and apparatus, it has
a LAN with 10 nodes a Thin Film Setup. Students are
regularly trained on C++ Programming and numerical methods.

The department has excellent tie-ups with some of the
National Laboratories to facilitate the students to
carry out their Project work. These include, the indian
Institute of Astrophysics (Kodaikanal), Indian Institure
of Geomagnetism (Tirunelveli), IGCAR (Kalpakkam), CECRI
(Kariakudu), IUCAA (Pune) and Nuclear Science Center
(New Delhi). The Madurai Kamarau University also helps
the students in the exection of their projects.

are well settled all over the world, some of them occupying
very high positions. This is perhaps the reason why the
